Now is a great chance to get planting those Summer flowering bulbs and seeds. They can often be planted in early Spring, however if you want to be super organised you can still get started in February. Popular choices include lilies, agapanthus and gladioli which will produce colourful and vibrant displays come summertime.
Set Up Planters
If you have planters already in your garden, now is the time to start inspecting them. By that we mean remove weeds, make any repairs if necessary, and refresh the soil to give your plants a good start. Planters are a wonderful addition to your garden decor, especially if you don’t have a lot of space to work with. One of the most simplest tasks you can do to prepare your garden for Spring is to give those flower beds a bit of a spring clean. Remove any leaves and debris, cut back any dead growth and dispose of any weeds to give your flower beds and borders a nice, fresh start.
Remove Garden Pests & Weeds
Getting on with pest and weed removal now will save you a whole lot of hassle come the Spring and Summer months! In particular, hibernating pests are worth hunting down at this time, such as snails and slugs who will end up nibbling on plants and leaves. Deal with them now and you and your plants will be in good hands come the warmer season.
Clean Out the Shed/Greenhouse
It may not be a task that’s everyone’s cup of tea, but cleaning out the shed or greenhouse is one of those gardening jobs that needs to be done at this time of year. Remove any rubbish from the shed and do a bit of organising to make sure everything is clean and tidy, and give your greenhouse a good clean to remove any grime. Once everything’s spick and span, check them both over for any structural damage too. If they’re in need of an upgrade, be sure to take a look at our selection of garden sheds and greenhouses!
Create a Compost Area
In this day and age where everyone is all about sustainability, it’s the perfect time to create a compost area in your garden. Not only does this allow you to do your bit, but it’s also going to produce a rich compost that will result in your plants thriving. Check out our range of plastic and wooden composters to get started, or if you’re a dab hand at carpentry, why not build your own?
Install a Water Butt
While we’re on the subject of sustainability, another way you can be a little more environmentally friendly in 2020 is by installing a water butt. We Brits get a hefty amount of rain during the year, so collecting it will not only save you money on the water bills when we enter the warmer months, but rain water is actually more beneficial for your plants. It’s a win win!
Spruce Up Any Extras
If you have any garden furniture that hasn’t been touched since last summer, or any additional pieces of garden decor that are looking a bit worse for wear, now is an excellent time to give them a bit of refresh. Make any repairs to any bits of furniture that are looking slightly worse for wear, or you can even take things further by sprucing them up with a lick of paint.
